Halloween

I have been surprised this year at how much Halloween seems to have caught on in France. Today I saw loads of chiildren in the village (37) in costumes and masks, as well as all the usual halloween items in the shops.

I was just wondering if this is a recent thing in France, as although I have not spent Halloween here for the last few years, I can never remember it being celebrated much before.

It's funny you should say that, a group of (French) colleagues were saying just the opposite the other day, that about 10 years ago it was the new and exciting thing to try and now days there is much, much less. Just the odd pumpkin and a few orange shop displays. This is certainly my experience too, that it is celebrated less than it was 10 years ago here.

I have kids at school, so always bombarded with the need for masks, costumes etc The peak seemed to be about 4 years ago for us, halloween stuff was everywhere in all the shops. Although still no comparison to the UK thankfully.

yes it has always been very much a thing for children here, and small ones at that. Walking round Tours I have seen a couple of the chocolate shops selling themed sweets and a few decorated pumpkins at les halles and that is really it! Whereas a few years ago it was in all the supermarkets and so on, it has just dwindled. Apparently people see it as an American festival rather than a celtic one. (this might be relevant as they quite like St Patrick's day here, on the other hand there is not a lot going on in March whereas here it is le toussaint and 11th November)
