I do know that they didn't know the answers to my questions about the website and having had websites made in the past I understand a bit about them and it was obviously more than they did which is worrying. If you employed an electrician and asked him what the power of a certain appliance/fuse etc was you would expect him to know wouldn't you? Surely you wouldn't expect him to say 'if you want to ask questions like that then i suggest you use someone else', would you?

expat, I completely understand your last statement. I think that the reply, which you received from the company, was odd, incredibly unprofessional and rather silly. In your position I probably wouldn't use the company either. However, I would be incredibly careful about writing, possibly, libellous comments on a public forum and I would be satisfied with knowing that they haven't got my money, whether or not they are good at what they do. Anyway, you must do as you wish to do.

If you really want to put your mind to rest, you need to contact the "greffe du tribunal de commerce". This governement agency is attached to the "registre du commerce et des sociétés (RCS)". It is a law in France that everyone should have access to this sort of information on companies. You can request to have any information from the companies identity card. On the website, or on any document form the company, you should have the SIRET and the town in which the company has registered with the greffe.

However, I think you have just fell onto a very bad company, but I would imagine that you'll find it to be registered. It would be too dangerous otherwise. Now up to you to check this information. It is free.

http://www.infogreffe.fr/infogreffe/index.jsp

Just follow this link and enter the name of the company or the "numéro SIREN". If you want the identity card of the company, you can order it online, it will cost about €6, but for a start, you will be able to see if the company is registered. You will be able to check the address to make sure it is the right one.

Good Luck

Good info Nicol,

I would just like to add another point : You can also get information on the company to find out if they are registered by going to www.coface.fr find the local office and telephone them and ask about the company, they do a rapid and effective real time search and will give you the information without cost.
